Humans are excellent at adapting to changing environments. Our genes are able to adjust their function and switch ‘on’ or ‘off’ depending on the different stresses present (the study of epigenetics).
Welcome to a more advanced level of biohacking.
I advise you to discuss this with your health practitioner. I am referring to fasting for periods of over 24 hours and ‘prolonged fasting’ which is usually 4 to 5 days. Do not even attempt if you are taking regular medication or are scheduled for surgery.
The effects are very powerful and accessible to all. Get ready to take it to the next level.
Switch to fat metabolism
After 12 to 14 hours of fasting your liver glycogen (sugar) stores are pretty much depleted. Your liver will now increase fatty acid metabolism, taken primarily from visceral fat (yippee!). Your brain will convert from glucose to ketone bodies for fuel (look up beta-hydroxybutyrate). You now have changed your chemical energy production pathways: decreasing aerobic glycolysis and increasing oxidative phosphorylation – congratulations.
Clear out dead and senescent cells (apoptosis, autophagy)
Fasting initiates a major cleanup process: getting rid of the biological garbage that constantly accumulates. This creates room for new cells to move in. Not only that, but the dead and half-dead cells just lying around are oozing inflammatory agents that cause damage adjacent to healthy cells.
When’s the last time you took out the garbage? Time to clean house!
Promote your stem cells
During prolonged fasting, organ size decreases, IGF-1 (growth hormone) levels drop and stem cell production increases. When re-feeding begins (this is the fun part!), IGF-1 rapidly increases and stem cells waiting on standby get activated. There is regeneration of all organs and tissues of the body and they return to normal size, but this time with a bunch of brand new cells. A new you!
